Pastor teaching from an open Bible during worship at St. John’s in San Bruno
We take Scripture seriously enough to read it deeply, wrestle with it honestly, and let it shape us.

All Scripture is God-breathed and useful.

2 TIMOTHY 3:16
  • WE OPEN THE BIBLE

Scripture isn't decoration or something we save for special occasions. The Bible is central to our worship, teaching, and life together because we expect God to meet us through it.
  • WE READ DEEPLY

Taking Scripture seriously means doing more than pulling out isolated verses. We pay attention to context, history, genre, language, and the larger story the Bible is telling.
  • WE WRESTLE HONESTLY

Some passages are beautiful. Others are difficult, confusing, or even troubling. We don't believe faith requires pretending otherwise. Honest questions can be part of faithful reading.
  • WE KEEP JESUS AT THE CENTER

We believe Scripture ultimately leads us toward Jesus. His life and teachings help us understand the heart of God and shape how we interpret and apply what we read.
  • WE LISTEN TO THE SPIRIT

Bible study isn't merely an academic exercise. We make room for the Holy Spirit to illuminate Scripture, challenge our assumptions, and help us hear what God may be saying to us today.
  • WE LET SCRIPTURE CHALLENGE US

We don't use the Bible simply to prove what we already believe or correct everyone else. We come to Scripture willing to have our own thinking, choices, and lives examined and changed.
  • WE DON'T FEAR QUESTIONS

Questions aren't the enemy of faith. We can disagree, explore different interpretations, and say “I don't know” while continuing to take both Scripture and one another seriously.
  • WE LIVE WHAT WE READ

The goal isn't simply knowing more Bible. Scripture calls us toward love, justice, mercy, holiness, reconciliation, service, and deeper faithfulness to Jesus. What we read should shape how we live.
  • WE DON’T CHOOSE BETWEEN FAITH AND SCIENCE

We worship God in spirit and in truth. Scientific truth is not the enemy of Scripture. What we learn about creation can deepen our understanding of the Bible and expand our wonder at the God who created it.

HOW THIS CONNECTS TO OUR BELIEFS

Scripture Serious grows from our belief that the Bible matters. We believe Scripture is inspired by God and bears faithful witness to God’s story and purposes. We read it thoughtfully, in context, and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit—trusting it to teach us, challenge us, and continually point us toward Jesus.

HOW THIS CONNECTS TO OUR OTHER VALUES

Taking Scripture seriously strengthens everything else we value.
Scripture continually points us toward Jesus, invites us to listen for the Spirit, challenges us to widen the circle of radical inclusion, and teaches us how to live faithfully in authentic community.
Our values work together: Scripture helps form the people Jesus calls us to become.
