What We Believe

Our faith is centered on Jesus, grounded in Scripture, alive to the Spirit, and lived together in community.

OUR SHARED FAITH

  • What We Believe About God
We believe in one God, eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God is the Creator of all things, holy, loving, and just. The Father is the source of life and love, the Son reveals God to us, and the Holy Spirit is God present with us. The Trinity is not three gods, but one God in three persons, perfectly united in love and purpose.
  • What We Believe About Jesus

We believe in Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He lived among us, taught with authority, and revealed the heart of God. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. On the third day, He rose again, defeating sin and death. He ascended into heaven and reigns as Lord, and He will come again. Through Him, we are brought into new life with God.
  • What We Believe About the Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit is God present with us—guiding, strengthening, and transforming our lives. The Spirit helps us understand Scripture, draws us closer to Jesus, and leads us into truth. The Holy Spirit shapes our character, produces spiritual fruit, and equips us to live out our faith and serve others with humility and love.
  • What We Believe About the Bible

We believe the Bible is the Word of God and the authority for our faith and how we live. Through Scripture, God reveals who He is, who we are, and the life He calls us to. As we read, study, and reflect on God’s Word, the Holy Spirit forms us, renews our minds, and directs our steps.
  • What We Believe About Humanity
We believe every person is created in the image of God and deeply loved by Him. At the same time, we recognize that all people are affected by sin, which separates us from God and distorts our lives. We are not left in that condition—God seeks us, restores us, and calls us back into relationship with Him.
  • What We Believe About Salvation

We believe that through Jesus Christ, we receive forgiveness, grace, and new life. Salvation is a gift from God, not something we earn. Through His life, death, and resurrection, we are reconciled to God and invited into a transformed life. This new life begins now and continues as we grow in faith.
  • What We Believe About Following Jesus

We believe following Jesus is a daily, growing relationship. It means trusting Him, obeying His teaching, and allowing His Word to shape our lives. This is not about perfection, but about direction—step by step becoming more like Christ in how we live, love, and lead.
  • What We Believe About the Church

We believe the Church is the community of people called to follow Jesus together. We gather to worship God, grow in faith, care for one another, and serve the world. The Church is not a place for perfect people, but a place where real people encounter God, belong, and are formed into His people for real life.

Inclusive, Open & Affirming

At St. John’s United Church, we believe every person is created in the image of God and deeply loved by Him. Because Jesus welcomes the outsider and draws near to the hurting, we commit ourselves to being a church where people are received with dignity, compassion, and grace.
We are an Open & Affirming congregation, and we welcome people of all backgrounds, identities, and life stories—including LGBTQ+ persons and families—into the full life of our church.
